During a virtual court session on the contentious lease of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) to the Adani Group, Kenyans vocally protested, chanting slogans like “Adani Must Go.”
The session, presided over by Judge Mwamunye, was disrupted by the intensity of the protests, leading the judge to adjourn the hearing. The case has now been rescheduled for October 22, 2024.
The proposed lease has sparked significant public opposition, with concerns that the deal could compromise Kenya’s sovereignty over such a crucial national asset.
Critics, including the Kenya Aviation Workers Union (KAWU) and human rights groups like the Law Society of Kenya (LSK), argue that JKIA is a profitable and strategic resource, and leasing it to a foreign company undermines transparency, governance, and public accountability.
The government, however, has defended the lease, citing the need for urgent modernization of JKIA’s infrastructure.
Despite this, tensions have escalated, with protests and strikes taking place, highlighting the deep divide between the government and the public over the issue.
