Something is Boiling in the Mountain! (Murima)

In recent developments, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua finds himself entangled in multiple controversies, particularly surrounding alleged financial misconduct and growing political opposition within his own base.

His troubles began with accusations of funneling vast sums—approximately KSh 12 billion—through various accounts linked to his family and close associates.

Authorities charged him with corruption, including money laundering, conflict of interest, and benefiting from dubious government tenders.

Although Gachagua initially faced a court-ordered asset freeze, the case was later dropped under procedural disputes after a DCI officer withdrew an affidavit on which the case was based.

This decision has sparked intense debate and criticism, with Gachagua alleging judicial misconduct and even seeking the removal of Justice Esther Maina, who initially ruled against him.

Aside from legal woes, Gachagua’s political influence in the Mt. Kenya region—referred to as “Murima”—has been under pressure. He has positioned himself as the “protector of the Mountain,” a symbolic guardian of the region’s socio-political interests.

However, some in the political sphere see him as overreaching, and there are murmurs of dissent from other local leaders. Despite his efforts to control the narrative through public appearances and invoking his regional loyalty, rivals have been quietly strategizing, seeking ways to unseat him.

This political tension recently reached a tipping point as rivals in the area openly challenged his influence, signaling a possible shift in Mt. Kenya’s political allegiance.

In response to mounting challenges, Gachagua has adopted an aggressive stance, voicing grievances and portraying himself as a victim of targeted political attacks.

His strategy of rallying public support and invoking his loyalty to Mt. Kenya might resonate with some locals, but the effectiveness remains uncertain as opponents continue to press forward.

This ongoing drama underscores the evolving dynamics of Kenyan politics, where loyalty, power struggles, and legal controversies often intertwine in the public eye.
