Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei, often referred to as “Chepsengol,” has strongly criticized Catholic bishops after they rejected a Ksh 600,000 donation from President William Ruto and accused his government of unkept promises and systemic issues.
The bishops, during their recent State of the Nation address, alleged that the administration was fostering a “culture of lies,” neglecting to tackle rising corruption, abductions, and human rights abuses, including alarming cases of femicide.
Cherargei defended President Ruto, arguing that the bishops’ criticisms were unwarranted and ungrateful.
He emphasized that the donation was an act of goodwill intended to support the church’s activities and urged the religious leaders to focus on uniting Kenyans instead of engaging in politically charged remarks.
The senator further accused them of being unfairly harsh on the government, highlighting the administration’s ongoing efforts to address national challenges.
The bishops, however, maintained their stance, calling for government accountability and action to protect Kenyans from insecurity and economic hardships.
They urged the leadership to prioritize the welfare of vulnerable citizens, particularly amidst soaring taxation and diminishing access to essential services like healthcare.
The clash underscores the growing tension between the church and state over governance and moral leadership in Kenya.
