Political tensions erupted in Murang’a County as Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua faced opposition while addressing the Kikuyu community.
Gachagua, who was in the region for a church fundraising event, reportedly encountered resistance from local leaders, including businessman Martin wa Janet.
Sources suggest Martin wa Janet criticized Gachagua’s leadership approach, accusing him of fostering division within the community.
This clash reflects the growing political rift between Gachagua and other leaders in the region, fueled by his staunch defense of the controversial Finance Bill and his alleged efforts to consolidate a power base in Mt. Kenya ahead of the 2027 elections.
Gachagua’s visit coincided with escalating discontent among residents and leaders. His push for the “one man, one vote, one shilling” revenue formula has polarized opinion, with some praising it as fair to Mt. Kenya while others see it as divisive.
Critics, including Public Service Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria, argue that Gachagua’s rhetoric undermines national unity and portrays President William Ruto as an adversary to Mt. Kenya interests. In response, Gachagua has accused allies of President Ruto of sabotaging his efforts to represent his community’s concerns effectively.
Supporters of Gachagua expressed outrage over the treatment of their leader, describing the resistance as politically motivated and part of a larger strategy to diminish his influence in Mt. Kenya.
They rallied in his defense, arguing that his focus on regional issues stems from his deep connection to the community.
However, detractors believe Gachagua’s strategy prioritizes local politics at the expense of his national responsibilities, fueling speculation about his ambitions for the 2027 elections.
