Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has publicly apologized to President William Ruto, admitting he failed to support certain government projects during his tenure.
Gachagua explained that his refusal stemmed from his belief that some initiatives were not in the best interest of Kenyans.
Speaking during an NTV interview on Sunday night, Gachagua specifically mentioned the Adani project and the Social Health Authority (SHA).
He acknowledged the President’s frustration but maintained that his principles prevented him from endorsing what he described as “unfavorable deals.”
He stated, “I ask President Ruto to forgive me. I could not defend Adani or SHA because they were against the people’s welfare.
If the current deputy can defend such things, it’s up to him, but I was elected to serve the people, not support corruption or injustice.”
Gachagua revealed that his refusal to defend these projects and his firm stance against corruption created tensions between him and Ruto.
He disclosed that he faced criticism from individuals close to the President for not shielding the government during controversies, including those on taxation and alleged corruption.
“They wanted me to defend Adani,” Gachagua said. “When I stayed silent, someone close to the President insulted me, accusing me of failing to protect the government.
But how could I defend what I knew was wrong? I am a man of integrity, and I will not compromise my principles.”
Reflecting on his relationship with Ruto, Gachagua admitted he had trusted the President blindly, a mistake he regrets.
He vowed to approach political alliances more cautiously in the future. “My biggest regret is dealing with President Ruto as a Christian.
I believed everything he told me and acted without question. If given another chance, I would deal with him as a politician, where you trust no one,” he remarked.
Despite the fallout, Gachagua insisted his decisions were guided by his commitment to integrity and serving the public, even at the cost of political alliances.
