Kimalel Primary School in Kipkaren Estate recently confronted a manager from RAI, accusing him of attempting to seize and cultivate their playground.
The school’s administration, alongside concerned parents and local residents, united to protect the land designated for students’ recreational activities.
This incident highlights the ongoing challenges educational institutions face regarding land ownership and the persistent threat of encroachment by private developers.
Land grabbing has been a significant issue in Eldoret, with several schools reporting similar challenges.
For instance, Uasin Gishu Primary School has faced encroachment on over eight acres of its land, affecting teachers’ quarters and playgrounds.
Despite holding a title deed for 18 acres, the school has struggled to reclaim its property from private developers who have erected commercial and residential structures on the land.
In response to these challenges, the Kenyan government has initiated measures to safeguard public school lands.
The Ministry of Lands, in collaboration with the National Land Commission and other stakeholders, has been issuing title deeds to public schools to protect them from land grabbers.
As of recent reports, approximately 1,000 public schools have received title deeds, with efforts ongoing to cover more institutions.
This initiative aims to ensure that schools have legal documentation to defend their property rights and provide a secure environment for students.
