The DCI (Directorate of Criminal Investigations) has revealed the events surrounding a dangerous situation where their officers were nearly killed, and a government vehicle was almost set on fire.
The incident occurred on Sunday during the arrest of a robbery and rape suspect, who had been in hiding in the Kiamanyeki area of Mwea East, Kirinyaga County.
According to the DCI, the suspect was arrested after a well-coordinated sting operation by Kirinyaga Central detectives.
These detectives were deployed by the Sub-County Criminal Investigations Officer to apprehend a suspect named in an ongoing case, Criminal Case No. 278/33/2024 and Court File No. E381.
They traced the suspect to a village and moved in quickly to make the arrest.
However, things took a dangerous turn when a crowd of angry villagers, believing the officers to be kidnappers due to their plain clothes, surrounded and attacked them.
The officers, who were in civilian attire during the operation, were accused of being abductors by the locals, who became hostile.
The situation nearly turned tragic as the mob threatened to set the government vehicle on fire unless the officers released the suspect.
It was only due to the timely intervention of the local police, the area chief, and Nyumba Kumi (local security leaders) that the situation was brought under control.
With their assistance, the officers were able to safely take the suspect into custody.
The DCI issued a stern warning to the public, urging them not to obstruct officers in the course of their duties, emphasizing that such actions are serious criminal offenses.
They further stressed that anyone attempting to help a criminal escape or obstruct justice would face legal consequences.
The incident serves as a reminder of the challenges law enforcement officers face when carrying out their duties, and the importance of public cooperation in maintaining law and order.
The DCI continues to encourage the public to respect the law and support the efforts of officers who are working to ensure the safety and security of all citizens.
