A tragic incident occurred in Likoni, Mombasa, where a Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) officer lost his life following a heated disagreement over an unpaid boda boda fare.

The incident unfolded when the officer, whose name has not been made public, tried to avoid paying the fare after getting off the motorcycle at Likoni Primary Vyemani Grounds.

It is reported that he pretended to make phone calls in an effort to delay payment to rider Antony Otieno.

When Otieno insisted on being paid, the officer reportedly pulled out his AK-47 rifle and fired shots into the air to intimidate him. The gunfire injured two bystanders nearby.

According to witnesses, the officer attempted to assert his authority by cocking the rifle and firing it into the air. However, this act of aggression only heightened the tension between the two men.

As the situation escalated, Otieno managed to overpower the officer. During the struggle, the officer allegedly bit Otieno on the nose.

In a desperate attempt to escape, the officer jumped onto the motorcycle, but Otieno was quick to act, pulling him off and taking control of the situation.

The officer continued to fire his weapon in an attempt to flee, but Otieno managed to disarm him and gain control of the rifle.

Support from bystanders further shifted the balance, leading to a fatal confrontation. The officer was eventually killed in the altercation. His body was later transported to the Coast General Hospital mortuary.

Authorities from Inuka Police Station quickly arrived at the scene, where they recovered the officer’s firearm, 12 rounds of ammunition, a mobile phone, the motorcycle, and four spent cartridges.

Meanwhile, the injured bystanders were rushed to Likoni Sub-County Hospital for medical attention.

The police have launched an investigation into the incident, and more details will be provided as the situation unfolds.
