Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has expressed serious concerns over the delay in reconstituting Kenya’s Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
Speaking at a church service in Mwiki, Kasarani, Gachagua emphasized that the electoral body should be established at least three years before the general elections to ensure credibility.
With only two and a half years remaining until the 2027 elections, he warned that the absence of a fully constituted IEBC could lead to suspicions of foul play.
Gachagua’s remarks align with concerns from other prominent figures. Supreme Court Judge Isaac Lenaola recently criticized both the government and opposition for their inaction regarding the IEBC’s formation.
He questioned Parliament’s focus on politically charged legislation while neglecting essential electoral reforms.
Justice Lenaola also urged citizens to use social media platforms to demand the prompt appointment of IEBC commissioners, suggesting the hashtag #AppointIEBCNow to amplify their voices.
The delay in reconstituting the IEBC has sparked public outcry, with many Kenyans perceiving it as a deliberate tactic to undermine the electoral process.
Gachagua called on President William Ruto’s administration to prioritize the immediate establishment of the electoral commission.
He stressed that a credible election process begins with a properly constituted IEBC, urging the government to act swiftly to restore public confidence in the electoral system.
