Former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s family is mourning the death of Kibathi Muigai, a well-known businessman and veteran rally driver. Kibathi, who was a first cousin to the retired president, passed away last week at the age of 72.
The announcement of his death was made public through a newspaper notice, which stated, “With sadness and acceptance of God’s will, we announce the passing on of Kibathi Muigai on January 10, 2025.”
Kibathi, widely referred to as “Wa Ngina,” was a prominent member of the Kenyatta family and had a strong presence in both business and motorsport.
He was a brother to notable politicians Beth Mugo, Ngengi Muigai, and Kungu Muigai.
Kungu Muigai, one of Kibathi’s brothers, is a key figure in the Kikuyu cultural community as the patron of Kiama Kiama.
He also serves as the chairperson of the Board of the Kenya Cultural Centre Council, a position he was appointed to in January 2023.
Kibathi made a name for himself in the Kenyan motorsport scene as a skilled rally driver. He famously competed in the Safari Rally, driving a Mitsubishi Colt Lancer with Arshad Khan as his navigator.
The Mitsubishi Lancer was widely recognized as the car driven by the legendary Joginder Singh, also known as the “Flying Sikh,” who won the rally three times.
The cause of Kibathi’s death has not yet been disclosed to the public. His burial is scheduled for Friday at his family home in Ichaweri, Gatundu South, where friends and family are expected to gather and pay their final respects.
