TUTAM! Drama in Tharaka Nithi as Kalonzo Heckled by Residents

Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka was on Friday, August 29, 2025, heckled by residents in Tharaka Nithi, where chants of “TUTAM!” disrupted his address and forced him to cut short parts of his tour.

The slogan, which has gained popularity in Mount Kenya East, is widely understood to mean “two-term,” symbolizing support for President William Ruto to serve two full terms in office.

The heckling was most visible in Kibong’a, Tharaka Constituency, where crowds repeatedly shouted “TUTAM!” as Kalonzo attempted to address them.

His engagements in Marimanti, Mukothima, and Gachoroni had drawn attention, but it was in Kibong’a that the atmosphere turned chaotic, with video clips showing the chants overwhelming his roadside speeches.

Following the incident, Kalonzo accused Deputy President Kithure Kindiki of orchestrating the disruption.

He described the actions as intimidation and political intolerance, arguing that the move was meant to silence opposition voices in the region. Kindiki, who hails from Tharaka Nithi and has considerable influence in the area, has not publicly responded to the claims.

The heckling came days after Tharaka Nithi Woman Representative Susan Ngugi had openly launched a “TUTAM movement” to rally support for President Ruto and Kindiki.

Analysts believe this build-up explains the charged political atmosphere and the strong presence of pro-government chants during Kalonzo’s visit.

The disruption highlights the growing political tension in Mount Kenya East, where opposition leaders are finding it increasingly difficult to gain ground amid the dominance of pro-government forces.

While Kalonzo maintains that the events were organized, government supporters insist the chants reflected the genuine voice of the people.
