Why Senator Gloria Orwoba Has Been Suspended From Parliament

Nominated Senator Gloria Orwoba has been suspended from Parliament for six months after the High Court upheld the Senate’s decision to take disciplinary action against her.

High Court Judge Lawrence Mugambi supported the Senate’s stance, emphasizing that Orwoba was given a fair chance to defend herself before the Powers and Privileges Committee but chose not to participate.

Judge Mugambi, in his ruling, clarified that Senator Orwoba had the opportunity to present her case, including raising any preliminary objections, but instead walked out on the committee without making her defense.

As a result, the court dismissed her petition, stating there was no violation of her right to fair administrative action as outlined by the law.

During the six-month suspension, Orwoba will lose access to all benefits associated with her parliamentary position.

She will not receive committee allowances, mileage reimbursements, or be involved in any official parliamentary activities.

The suspension was recommended in a committee report presented on August 10, which accused Orwoba of failing to appear and provide evidence supporting allegations she made against fellow senators.

She had previously claimed that some of her colleagues were involved in corruption and sexual harassment within Parliament.

Her allegations, which were shared on social media, included claims that a senior Senate official harassed her after she rejected his sexual advances.

She further accused certain senators of receiving per diem payments and other benefits in exchange for sexual favors and support for specific legislative agendas.

Senator Orwoba, responding to the issue, stated that the matter is still being addressed in court, which is why she had refrained from making public comments earlier.

However, she added that since Parliament continued discussing and debating the matter, she felt compelled to share her side of the story.
