The United States Embassy in Kenya will be closed on Monday, January 20, 2025, in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, a significant holiday in the United States.
The Embassy made the announcement on its official X account, stating that it would suspend services for the day in honor of the federal holiday.
Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is observed annually on the third Monday of January to commemorate the life and achievements of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who is celebrated for his pivotal role in advocating for racial equality in the US.
On this day, Americans reflect on his legacy of peaceful activism and are encouraged to participate in volunteer work as part of a national day of service.
This closure will be the second time in January 2025 that the US Embassy has shut its doors for an American holiday. The first instance occurred on January 8, when the Embassy observed a national day of mourning for the late former President Jimmy Carter, who passed away at the age of 100.
The embassy had temporarily suspended services on that day as part of the mourning period following his death.
As a result of Monday’s closure, Kenyans in need of urgent consular services, such as passport replacements, visa processing, or citizenship matters, will be unable to access the Embassy until the following day, Tuesday, January 21.
Individuals with plans to travel to the US or requiring assistance from other US federal institutions will also experience delays.
Martin Luther King Jr. Day is the only federal holiday in the US that is recognized as a national day of service. On this day, Americans across the country engage in volunteer activities to give back to their communities. Additionally, national parks in the US will waive entrance fees for all visitors.
The Embassy regularly closes on other important US holidays, including Independence Day (July 4), Columbus Day (commemorating Christopher Columbus’s voyage in 1492), and Memorial Day (the last Monday of May), which honors the US military personnel who have died in service to the country.
These closures are a part of the Embassy’s commitment to observing key US holidays.
