Government Reassigns Officers from Duka Moja and Ntulele Police Stations After Deadly Clashes.
The National Police Service (NPS) and the Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA) have taken decisive action following violent clashes between police officers and residents at Duka Moja Trading Center in Narok County. These clashes occurred during protests that turned chaotic on Friday.
In response, the government has ordered the immediate transfer of all officers stationed at Duka Moja and Ntulele Police Stations, which were involved in handling the protests.
This decision was announced on Saturday during a peace meeting where security officials met with residents to restore calm in the area.
“We will ensure that by Monday, all officers currently stationed at these two police stations will be reassigned, and a new team will take over,” said William Ole Yiampoi, the Director of Operations at NPS.
He assured residents that the incoming officers would be carefully selected, stating, “We will deploy officers with clean records who have no prior history of misconduct in their previous assignments.”
The unrest began after a speeding Prado ran over and killed 39 sheep belonging to local herders on Thursday night.
Outraged by the incident, herders took to the highway on Friday to stage demonstrations, disrupting transport operations along the busy road.
The protests escalated into violent confrontations, leading to the deaths of three people and injuries to nine police officers.
One officer sustained severe injuries and had to be airlifted to Nairobi for specialized medical treatment.
In a particularly shocking incident, residents attacked a police officer, severing his arm and seizing his firearm.
During the Saturday meeting, officials reported that the stolen firearm had since been recovered, and efforts to restore normalcy in the area were underway.
Security officials reassured residents of their commitment to maintaining peace and fostering better relations between law enforcement and the community.
The reassignments and introduction of a new team of officers are seen as critical steps toward rebuilding trust and ensuring the area remains secure.
