Government Issues One-Week Notice to Parents & Businesses

Government Urges Parents and Businesses to Monitor Children’s Content During Mid-Term Break

The government, through the Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB), has issued a one-week notice to parents, guardians, and businesses, urging them to pay close attention to the content children consume while they are on their mid-term break.

In a statement released on Thursday, February 27, KFCB highlighted the importance of ensuring that children, who are currently on a one-week break from school, watch age-appropriate content on television and online platforms. The board encouraged parents and guardians to supervise the types of audio-visual material their children access during the break, which will last until March 2.

“With schools closed for the mid-term break, children will be at home throughout the weekend and into next week. We urge parents and guardians to monitor the television content their children are watching during this time,” the KFCB statement read. The board recommended that parents set clear screen-time limits to reduce the amount of time children spend watching TV and browsing social media.

In addition to advising parents, KFCB also called on content creators to be responsible for the content they upload on various digital platforms, especially since children can easily access such material. The board stressed that content creators should be mindful of the impact their posts might have on younger audiences.

The KFCB further cautioned video show operators, PlayStation centers, and other entertainment providers to prevent children from entering their facilities if the content being shown is not appropriate for their age.

“We encourage parents to create rules around screen time and ensure children are only watching content suitable for their age group. We also urge content creators to take responsibility for the material they share online and on broadcast platforms,” KFCB added.

To help parents navigate this digital age, the board announced that it will continue to offer support through its Parent Digital Literacy Programme (PDLP). This program aims to equip parents with the necessary skills to guide and monitor their children’s use of digital media effectively.

The announcement comes just after schools across Kenya released students for a mid-term break starting on February 26. Most institutions are set to reopen on March 3.
