With less than three years remaining until Kenya’s 2027 general elections, the race for key political positions is already gaining momentum.
Renowned city lawyer Danstan Omari has officially joined the fray, declaring his intention to vie for Nairobi’s Senatorial seat.
Speaking during an interview with NTV, Omari confirmed his plans to step into Nairobi’s highly competitive political arena.
He emphasized his readiness to lead, stating that the capital city requires a competent and visionary leader, a role he believes he is well-equipped to fulfill.
“Nairobi needs a strong and capable person to be its Senator. While Senator Sifuna has done well, history has shown us a pattern where individuals move between senatorial and gubernatorial roles, as seen with leaders like Sonko and Sakaja,” said Omari.
Interestingly, Omari revealed his long-term political ambitions, stating that he intends to run for Nairobi Governor in 2032 after completing his tenure as Senator.
When questioned about running against the current Senator, Edwin Sifuna, Omari expressed confidence in his plans and suggested that Sifuna should aim for the governorship in the upcoming elections.
“This is an ideal time for Sifuna to transition to the role of Governor. I will be in the race to succeed him as Senator and later take on the Governor’s position in 2032,” Omari asserted.
The seasoned lawyer did not shy away from criticizing Sifuna’s performance, accusing him of failing to adequately oversee Governor Johnson Sakaja’s administration.
Omari emphasized the need for a leader who can effectively manage Nairobi’s critical position as Kenya’s capital and a hub for African leadership.
“Nairobi deserves a focused, articulate, and forward-thinking leader. This is the heart of Africa where the Head of State resides, and it cannot be mismanaged,” Omari noted.
However, Omari remained tight-lipped about the political party he plans to use for his bid, indicating that he is open to contesting under any party that aligns with his vision for Nairobi.
At 60 years old, Omari brings decades of experience to the table, having built a stellar reputation as a lawyer who has handled numerous high-profile cases alongside prominent legal minds.
Before his legal career, he worked as a teacher, further grounding him in leadership and public service.
Omari explained that his decision to join politics was fueled by his desire to ensure better accountability for the funds allocated to Nairobi from the national government.
The 2027 elections are expected to draw a crowded field of candidates for Nairobi’s top political positions.
Apart from Omari, other notable figures like Embakasi East MP Babu Owino and Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi have expressed interest in challenging Governor Sakaja for the gubernatorial seat.
With the political temperature rising, Nairobi is set to witness a heated contest as candidates jostle for leadership roles in the city at the heart of Kenya’s governance and economy.
