Kung’u Muigai, a first cousin to former President Uhuru Kenyatta, has secured a position in the national government once again.
According to a gazette notice released on Friday, January 24, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, who also serves as the Cabinet Secretary for Gender, Culture, Arts, and Heritage, officially announced the reappointment of Muigai to the Kenya Cultural Centre Council.
“The Cabinet Secretary for Gender, Culture, Arts, and Heritage reappoints Kung’u Muigai to be a member of the Kenya Cultural Centre Council for a period of three years, effective from January 24, 2025,” read the statement in the notice.
This reappointment follows a legal tussle that had nullified his earlier appointment. The High Court recently ruled against Muigai’s initial appointment, which had been made by former Sports and Culture CS Ababu Namwamba.
A concerned Kenyan had challenged the appointment in court, arguing that the former CS overstepped his mandate, violating the constitution by making an appointment he lacked the authority to execute. High Court Judge Lawrence Mugambi upheld the petition, ruling that the appointment was unconstitutional and quashing the position.
Kung’u Muigai is widely recognized for his independent political stance, which often differs from the broader Kenyatta family’s position.
During the 2022 general elections, while former President Uhuru Kenyatta and his allies actively supported Raila Odinga’s presidential bid, Muigai openly endorsed President William Ruto. A retired army captain, Muigai is believed to have played a key role in Ruto’s campaign, particularly by rallying a significant number of Kikuyu elders to back Ruto’s candidacy.
In addition to his government role, Muigai serves as the patron of the Kenya National Council of Elders.
