In a recent event in Bumala, Marachi West Ward Member of County Assembly (MCA) Simon Maina Kuria was reportedly seen distributing Sh1,000 notes to youths attending President William Ruto’s function.
This act has sparked discussions about the role of elected officials in engaging with their constituents and the implications of such handouts on political ethics.
Reports indicate that MCAs from various wards in Busia County received a total of Sh20 million from the Governor to facilitate the transportation of residents to attend the president’s functions.
While the intention might have been to ensure adequate representation at the event, the method of distributing cash handouts has raised concerns.
Critics argue that such practices could be viewed as attempts to unduly influence or curry favor with constituents, potentially undermining the principles of fair political engagement.
Simon Maina Kuria, who has been a resident of Marachi West for over three decades, was elected as the MCA in the recent elections.
His election was notable as he garnered 3,053 votes, surpassing his closest competitor, Sawe Gomba, who received 2,194 votes. Maina’s victory was attributed to the electorate’s focus on his abilities rather than tribal affiliations, reflecting the cosmopolitan nature of Busia County.
As discussions continue, it remains to be seen how such actions will influence public perception and the future of political practices in the region.
