President William Ruto has acknowledged the public’s concerns about the behaviour of some officials in his administration, including the controversial actions of nominated Senator Karen Nyamu.
Speaking during an X Space Engagement Forum on Friday, July 5, 2024, Ruto responded to criticisms from netizens about the perceived misconduct and ostentatious lifestyles of certain leaders.
A user specifically questioned why Senator Nyamu, known for making headlines for her lavish lifestyle and lack of modesty, still holds a public office. Addressing these concerns, Ruto admitted that some officials have displayed arrogance and a lack of sensitivity to the public’s sentiments.
“I agree that some of our officials are arrogant, and some of them display obnoxious opulence that angers the public. Sometimes I call these people and give them a piece of my mind. Even Nyamu, I have had to sit her down and tell her that she needs to change her ways.”
President Ruto explained that he has personally engaged Senator Nyamu on multiple occasions, advising her to reform her public image and conduct. He attributed her behaviour to the excitement that often accompanies young individuals assuming high positions of power, indicating that such enthusiasm can sometimes lead to poor decision-making.
“When you are in my position, you are also a father figure,” Ruto noted. “Some of these young people get excited about many things and sometimes do the wrong things. Nyamu is a girl I have had to sit down and tell her, look, you need to do things differently. I know what is going on and I have promised that I will be making changes.”
Ruto also addressed concerns about other officials, including Finance Committee Chairman Kimani Kuria and Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah. Kuria faced criticism for suggesting that those who cannot afford a proposed vehicle levy should keep their cars at home, while Ichung’wah’s comments about Gen Z protesters using iPhones and eating at KFC were seen as insensitive.
Ruto apologized on behalf of Kuria and Ichung’wah, describing them as young leaders with bright futures.
“The day you become a public speaker, you will understand how easy it is to make a mistake,” Ruto said. “The MP for Molo is a young man who is doing his very best. I apologize for him because they are among the people I am mentoring so that they can become leaders tomorrow. He is bright and has a bright future.”
