President William Ruto has further strengthened the relationship between Kenya and Egypt by signing 12 new Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with the North African country.

During a joint press conference at the Presidential Headquarters in Cairo, Ruto and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi announced the successful signing of the 12 MoUs, which expand upon four earlier agreements made in 2024.

These new MoUs represent a significant milestone in the growing partnership between the two nations.

In his speech, President Ruto highlighted that the new agreements mark a pivotal moment in deepening the collaboration between Kenya and Egypt.

This follows productive talks held at the 7th session of the Kenya-Egypt Joint Commission for Cooperation in Nairobi in 2024.

He emphasized that both countries are committed to advancing their relationship into a strategic and all-encompassing partnership that will create even more opportunities for the people of both nations.

“I am delighted to announce that we are elevating our partnership to a level where both our countries will benefit, offering greater opportunities to our people,” President Ruto stated.

The 12 MoUs cover various key areas including trade, investment, education, research, and technology exchange. The agreements also extend to political discussions, diplomatic training, enhancing foreign service capabilities, and fostering stronger investment cooperation.

Other areas of collaboration outlined in the MoUs include promoting gender equality, strengthening maritime partnerships, empowering youth, advancing higher education and scientific research, enhancing telecommunications and IT, and expanding cooperation in space exploration. Furthermore, there is a focus on governance, sustainable development, as well as housing, construction, and urban development.

In terms of maritime cooperation, both the Kenya Ports Authority and the Lamu Port Authority stand to benefit from the partnership with the Alexandria Port Authority, which is responsible for managing about 60% of Egypt’s foreign trade.

President Ruto expressed confidence that the agreements would soon be fully implemented, with the MoUs expected to take effect in the near future.

“I am confident that we will swiftly finalize the remaining steps, ensuring that these MoUs are put into action as soon as possible.

These agreements will not only strengthen our shared vision for economic transformation but also promote sustainable development, benefiting the people of both Kenya and Egypt,” President Ruto added.

Additionally, President Ruto proposed the creation of a Joint Business Council to further bolster business relations and enhance bilateral cooperation between the two countries.

This new set of agreements follows the earlier 2024 MoUs signed by Kenya and Egypt, which focused on areas such as trade, investment, agriculture, tourism, energy, and infrastructure development.
