NTSA Issues Warning on Parking Violations and Penalties for Motorists
The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has warned motorists against parking in unauthorized areas, including roadsides, road reserves, roadways, bridges, and tunnels. The Authority emphasized that such actions pose safety risks to other road users and could lead to hefty penalties.
In its latest Commercial Service Vehicle regulations, NTSA clarified that in cases where no designated parking areas are available, drivers must ensure their vehicles are parked at least two meters away from the edge of the road.
The agency explained that parking too close to the road creates hazards by blocking pedestrian pathways, reducing visibility for other motorists, and interfering with the smooth flow of traffic.
“No vehicle owner or operator should instruct, encourage, or allow a driver to park in undesignated areas, including roadsides, road reserves, roadways, bridges, and tunnels,” NTSA stated. The Authority warned that any motorist caught violating these regulations will be fined up to Ksh20,000.
In addition to the financial penalty, offenders may also face a jail term of up to six months. In some cases, both the fine and imprisonment may apply.
Furthermore, NTSA issued a stern reminder to commercial vehicle drivers about the importance of holding a valid driving license at all times. The Authority stressed that commercial vehicle licenses must be renewed annually to remain valid.
For those looking to renew their commercial service vehicle operator licenses, NTSA outlined the required documents. Applicants must submit copies of their National Identification Card (ID) and provide accurate details of their physical address. The renewal fee for the commercial service vehicle operator license is set at Ksh2,000.
NTSA also stated that it reserves the right to suspend or revoke a driver’s license if the holder fails to comply with the new regulations.
However, before any suspension or revocation takes effect, the Authority will provide the affected driver with a written explanation outlining the reasons for the action.
Additionally, the Authority assured motorists that those who feel unfairly penalized under these new regulations have the right to appeal.
Any grievances can be formally submitted, and NTSA will forward the complaints to the Appeals Board for review. The Appeals Board is expected to resolve such cases within 14 days.
Motorists are advised to adhere strictly to the new parking regulations and licensing requirements to avoid fines, license suspensions, or other legal consequences.
