The Likoni Ferry crossing in Mombasa has been the scene of several alarming incidents in recent times, highlighting ongoing safety and security challenges. In one notable event, a confrontation erupted between Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) soldiers and police officers stationed at the ferry.

A widely circulated video captured armed KDF personnel engaging in a physical altercation with the police, with one soldier seen slapping a security officer.

The exact cause of this dispute remains unclear, but it underscores the tensions that can arise even among security agencies.

Following the incident, both the Military Police and other investigative bodies initiated probes to understand the circumstances leading to the clash. The KDF expressed regret over the event, emphasizing their commitment to professionalism.

In another distressing episode, a stampede occurred at the Likoni Ferry crossing, resulting in injuries to several passengers.

The chaos ensued when a large crowd attempted to board the ferry simultaneously, leading to a dangerous crush. Emergency services responded promptly, transporting the injured to local hospitals for treatment.

This incident highlighted the challenges of crowd control at the busy crossing, especially during peak hours. In response, authorities have emphasized the need for enhanced safety measures and better communication to prevent such occurrences in the future.

These incidents have prompted a reevaluation of safety protocols at the Likoni Ferry. The Kenya Ferry Services (KFS) has announced plans to bolster security checks and implement stricter safety measures to ensure the well-being of both commuters and motorists.

This includes regular maintenance of ferry equipment, increased training for staff in emergency response, and public awareness campaigns to educate passengers on safety procedures.

The goal is to prevent future tragedies and maintain the ferry as a reliable mode of transportation for the thousands who depend on it daily.

The Likoni Ferry serves as a critical link between Mombasa Island and the mainland, facilitating the movement of thousands of passengers and vehicles each day. Given its importance, ensuring its safe and efficient operation is paramount.

The recent incidents serve as a stark reminder of the challenges inherent in managing such a vital service and underscore the need for continuous improvement in safety and security measures.
