Gachagua Allies Speak Out After Being Kicked Out from Senate Committees

Kiambu Senator Karungo Wa Thang’wa and Nyandarua Senator John Methu have broken their silence after being ousted from their respective Senate committees.

On Thursday, Senator Karungo released a statement saying he had no regrets about losing his position as the Chairperson of the Senate Roads and Transport Committee.

Instead, he viewed the move as an opportunity to dedicate more time to serving the people of Kenya.

Expressing his gratitude to the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) leadership in the Senate, Karungo revealed that he had anticipated the removal.

He added that the dismissal now allowed him greater freedom to criticize President William Ruto’s administration without any constraints.

“I saw it coming! I expected it! The purge has happened. But I am taking it like a man and moving forward without fear. In fact, I sincerely thank the yellow party for giving me more time on my hands,” Karungo stated.

The outspoken senator went on to criticize President Ruto, saying he had grown tired of the numerous promises made about road construction projects, which, according to him, never materialized.

“As the Chair of the Roads and Transport Committee, I struggled to keep up with all the big talk—‘The road will start from Thika, stretch to Garissa, reach Mandera, extend to Rhamu, and finally get to Modagashe’—all just talk with no real action,” he remarked sarcastically.

Moments before Karungo spoke, Senator Methu also confirmed his removal as Chairperson of the Senate Lands, Environment, and Natural Resources Committee. Additionally, he was stripped of his membership in the County Public Accounts Committee.

Methu attributed his dismissal to his open support for Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

Just like Karungo, Methu expressed gratitude to the UDA parliamentary leadership for giving him the opportunity to serve in the two committees. However, he made it clear that he had no regrets about being ousted.

“It was an absolute honour to serve as the Chairperson of the Senate Lands, Environment, and Natural Resources Committee, as well as a member of the County Public Accounts Committee,” Methu stated.

“I fully understand that my political stance contributed to this decision, but I stand by my choices without any regrets. I appreciate President William Ruto and the UDA party for the opportunity they gave me,” he added.

These committee reshuffles took place shortly after the Senate resumed its sittings on Tuesday, February 11, following a long recess that began in early December 2024.

The session kicked off with a major restructuring of key Senate committees, leading to these dismissals.
