President William Ruto and Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi have announced a fresh round of government appointments through a gazette notice, filling key positions in various state agencies.
One of the notable appointments was that of Captain Kungu Muigai, a cousin of former President Uhuru Kenyatta.
His appointment comes just weeks after a court nullified his membership in the Kenya Cultural Centre Council. Now, he has been promoted to serve as the Chairperson of the same council for a two-year term.
Mudavadi, who also serves as the Cabinet Secretary for Gender, Culture, the Arts, and Heritage, played a crucial role in these state appointments.
Apart from Muigai’s promotion, he also appointed John Odek as a member of the Board of Directors for the National Museums of Kenya.
Odek will serve for three years. Additionally, Halima Daud was appointed to the National Government Affirmative Action Fund Board for the same period.
In a separate move, President Ruto appointed Ndungu Athinji as the Chairperson of the Kenya Tea Board for a three-year term.
His appointment led to the removal of Jacob Kamau Kahiu, who previously held the position.
“In exercise of the powers conferred by section 7(1)(a) of the Tea Act, as read together with section 51(1) of the Interpretation and General Provisions Act, I, William Samoei Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces, appoint N. Ndungu G. Athinji to be the Chairperson of the Tea Board of Kenya for three (3) years, with effect from the 14th of February, 2025,” read part of the gazette notice.
Other key appointments were made across various ministries:
- Labour Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua restructured the Seafarers Wages Council by naming Mwinyi Mohammed Jahazi as Chairperson. He also appointed Captain Peter Munga and Julius Segera as board members, all set to serve for three years.
- Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi appointed Stella Akinyi Omotto as a board member of the National Oil Corporation of Kenya.
- Public Service Cabinet Secretary Biden Muturi reappointed Christine Achieng’ Odera as a board member of the National Youth Service Council for another three-year term.
- Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir named Fozia Ali Hassan as a member of the Transport Licensing Appeals Board.
- Mining Cabinet Secretary Hassan Joho made changes to the Siaya County Artisanal Mining Committee. He appointed Professor Jacqueline Oduol as the committee leader, alongside other newly selected members.
These appointments reflect a strategic reshuffle in government agencies as Ruto’s administration seeks to place key figures in influential positions.
