Malava MP Moses Malulu Injendi Passes Away After Weeks in ICU
Malava Member of Parliament, Moses Malulu Injendi, has died after battling health complications for several weeks. His death was confirmed on Monday, February 17, 2025.
The lawmaker had been receiving treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) before he succumbed to his illness.
Although the exact cause of his death has not been made public, sources indicate that he had been struggling with breathing difficulties in the days leading up to his passing.
National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula officially announced Injendi’s death, describing him as a dedicated and hardworking leader.
According to Wetang’ula, the MP breathed his last at approximately 5:15 pm while undergoing treatment at Aga Khan Hospital in Nairobi.
“It is with deep sorrow that I share the sad news of the passing of our dear colleague, Moses Malulu Injendi. He passed away this evening, February 17, 2025, at 5:15 pm at Aga Khan Hospital in Nairobi.
He was the elected Member of Parliament for Malava Constituency and also served as the Vice Chairman of the Departmental Committee on Education & Research,” Wetang’ula stated in an official communication to newshub.co.ke.
The Speaker further praised Injendi’s dedication to serving the nation, especially in matters concerning education and the sugar industry. He noted that the legislator had played a key role in pushing for reforms that aimed to improve the lives of many Kenyans.
Concerns Over Injendi’s Health Had Been Growing
Injendi’s death follows weeks of speculation regarding his health condition. In January, unverified reports had circulated claiming that the MP had passed away, sparking concern among his constituents and political allies. However, Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa came forward at the time to dismiss the rumors, clarifying that Injendi was undergoing medical treatment.
Governor Barasa, however, declined to disclose specific details about the MP’s illness, stating that the family had chosen to keep the matter private.
A Bold Leader With a Strong Political Legacy
Moses Malulu Injendi was a long-serving lawmaker who had earned the trust of his constituents over the years.
A key member of Musalia Mudavadi’s Amani National Congress (ANC), he had been in Parliament since 2013 and was serving his third consecutive term. His re-election multiple times reflected the confidence that the people of Malava had in his leadership.
The late MP was known for his outspoken nature and firm stance on various issues. He was never afraid to voice his opinions, even when they sparked controversy.
One of his most notable political moments occurred in November 2024, when he criticized the church for rejecting cash donations from President William Ruto.
During a public event, Injendi openly expressed disappointment over the decision by the Nairobi Archdiocese leadership to turn down the President’s contributions.
He went as far as apologizing to President Ruto on behalf of the Church, arguing that the institution needed financial support.
“We were embarrassed, and I would like to appeal to our bishops that what you did to the President was unnecessary.
May God forgive and bless you,” he remarked at the time, adding that rejecting the donations was improper given the Church’s need for financial assistance.
Controversial Stances and Legislative Proposals
Beyond his bold political statements, Injendi also made headlines for his legislative proposals. In 2019, he sponsored a bill that sought to regulate social media platforms, particularly Facebook and WhatsApp groups.
The proposed law required administrators of such groups to register with the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) before launching their platforms.
His unexpected death marks a significant loss to the political landscape of Kenya, particularly in Kakamega County, where he had built a reputation as a fearless leader.
Another Major Political Loss in Kenya
Injendi’s passing comes just a day after the country lost another prominent leader, Baringo Senator William Cheptumo, who died at the age of 57.
The consecutive deaths of the two legislators have left the nation in mourning, with political leaders and citizens alike expressing their grief.
As the country comes to terms with this loss, tributes continue to pour in for the late Malava MP, honoring his service, leadership, and commitment to improving the lives of Kenyans.
