Kiambu County Senator Karungo Wa Thang’wa was the first to break the news on Tuesday morning, sharing an update on social media. He posted, “DCI at it again. They have arrested Juja MP George Koimburi. Reason? They are yet to say!”
Speaking to Newshub.co.ke, Thang’wa confirmed that the Juja lawmaker had been intercepted by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) while heading to Parliament on Tuesday morning.
The senator revealed that Koimburi had called him as he was being taken to the DCI Headquarters along Kiambu Road. However, the MP had not been informed why he was being detained, leaving many to question whether it was a legal arrest or a case of intimidation.
Thang’wa and Koimburi are well-known allies of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and have frequently found themselves in controversial situations due to their outspoken political stance.
City lawyer Ndegwa Njiru also confirmed the MP’s arrest, posting on social media that he was at the DCI headquarters representing Koimburi. According to Njiru, the legislator was being held over statements he made over the weekend regarding President William Ruto.
“I am at the DCI headquarters representing Hon. Koimburi, who has been arrested for saying the obvious—that Kasongo spent over Ksh13 billion on Raila’s failed AUC bid. What’s wrong with asking for accountability? Does the truth hurt?” Njiru questioned.
Koimburi had made the remarks during a church service, accusing the government of misusing public funds in an effort to secure votes for former Prime Minister Raila Odinga in his bid to become the African Union Commission (AUC) chairperson.
“Kenyans are concerned after witnessing taxpayer money being wasted to bribe individuals so they could vote for Raila Amollo Odinga as the new AU chairman in Addis Ababa. This is a disgrace,” Koimburi remarked.
The MP’s comments came after Odinga lost the election to Djibouti’s Mahmoud Ali Yousouff on Saturday, February 15, despite reports that the Kenyan government had spent millions lobbying for his candidacy.
