In a significant political development, the Jubilee Party, led by former President Uhuru Kenyatta, has officially endorsed former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i as its presidential candidate for the 2027 elections.
This decision, announced by Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni, positions Matiang’i as a formidable contender against incumbent President William Ruto.
Kioni highlighted Matiang’i’s extensive experience in government, particularly his role in overseeing key national projects during Kenyatta’s administration.
“When William decided to go and do campaigns, the person who was left deputizing or helping Uhuru was Fred Matiang’i,” Kioni stated, emphasizing Matiang’i’s intimate knowledge of initiatives such as Huduma Number, the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB), and the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).
The endorsement followed a strategic meeting attended by influential figures from Kenyatta’s inner circle, including former Interior Principal Secretary Karanja Kibicho, former ICT Cabinet Secretary Joe Mucheru, and Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka.
During this gathering, Kenyatta reportedly encouraged Matiang’i to collaborate with other opposition leaders to mount a robust challenge against President Ruto’s administration.
In response to Jubilee’s endorsement of Matiang’i, President Ruto has expressed confidence in his administration’s track record and remains unfazed by the emerging political alliances. He emphasized that his focus remains on delivering development and fulfilling his campaign promises to the Kenyan people.
This political maneuvering sets the stage for a competitive 2027 election, with various opposition factions potentially uniting to present a consolidated front against the incumbent.
As the political landscape evolves, alliances and strategies are expected to continue shifting in the lead-up to the elections.
