Gachagua Threatens Protests if Chief Justice Martha Koome is Removed
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has vowed to lead nationwide protests if Chief Justice Martha Koome is ousted from office.
Speaking during a church service at AIPCA St. Joseph’s KK Garu Church in Antubetwe-Kiongo Ward, Igembe North, Meru County, Gachagua strongly criticized President William Ruto, accusing him of attempting to suppress political influence in the Mount Kenya region.
Gachagua expressed deep concern over Koome’s legal troubles, arguing that her current predicament is not accidental but a deliberate scheme to force her out of office. He directly blamed President Ruto for allegedly using his influence to engineer Koome’s removal.
“We are fully aware that he is planning to remove Chief Justice Koome from office,” Gachagua declared. “This has gone too far. How can you systematically eliminate the leadership of the very community that helped you ascend to power?”
The former DP passionately vowed to take action if Koome is dismissed, urging his supporters to be ready to hit the streets in protest. “If they succeed in removing Koome and I call for demonstrations, will you stand with me?” he asked the congregation. “We cannot sit back and watch as Ruto dismantles Mount Kenya’s leadership.”
Gachagua Slams Kenya Kwanza Leaders in Meru
During his speech, Gachagua also took a swipe at Kenya Kwanza leaders in Meru, accusing them of remaining silent while Koome faces political attacks. He warned that those who have betrayed the community will be voted out in the 2027 elections, promising that his yet-to-be-launched political party would spearhead their removal.
“To all Meru leaders who have abandoned their people, be prepared to face the consequences in 2027,” he warned. “This Mount Kenya community does not forget betrayal, and for the next 50 years, traitors will pay the price. We will send you home along with William Ruto.”
Gachagua further predicted that his new political party, which he plans to unveil in May 2025, will secure at least 120 Members of Parliament. He urged Members of County Assemblies (MCAs) to start making plans to join his political movement ahead of party nominations.
Chief Justice Koome Fights to Keep Her Position
Meanwhile, Chief Justice Martha Koome has turned to the High Court in a bid to halt the ongoing petitions seeking her removal. She argued that the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) does not have the legal authority to probe allegations against Supreme Court judges.
In her petition, Koome cited Article 168(1) of the Constitution, emphasizing that the process for removing a judge is strictly outlined by law and cannot be arbitrarily influenced.
“The petitions filed against me are based on Supreme Court decisions and the execution of powers granted by the Constitution,” she argued in court documents.
With tensions rising, the battle over Koome’s fate is shaping up to be a major political showdown, with Gachagua positioning himself as a fierce defender of Mount Kenya’s leadership against what he sees as a targeted purge.
