Authorities in Kenya have successfully thwarted an attempted kidnapping of foreign nationals by suspected Al Shabaab operatives.
A Somali national, who had disguised himself as a Kenyan citizen, was arrested alongside a Kenyan accomplice in Mandera County.
The 29-year-old suspect had illegally entered Kenya from El-Ade, Somalia, and had falsified identification documents to pass as a Kenyan.
Investigators from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) revealed that the suspect had teamed up with a local associate to orchestrate a cross-border abduction.
According to intelligence reports, the duo had planned to kidnap foreign workers employed at a sewer line construction site in Mandera.
Their objective was to seize the victims and transport them across the border into Somalia. However, security forces intervened in time after receiving a tip-off.
Further investigations uncovered how the plan was meant to unfold. The Somali suspect had allegedly agreed to pay his Kenyan accomplice Ksh100,000 for his role in initiating the kidnapping.
Additionally, an extra Ksh300,000 was promised to ensure the safe transportation of the abducted individuals across the border.
On Tuesday, February 18, security personnel conducted a high-level operation that led to the arrest of the Kenyan accomplice in Mandera town’s Metameta area.
Both suspects are now undergoing intense interrogation by anti-terror detectives as investigations continue.
They are expected to face charges under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (POTA), which criminalizes involvement with terrorist organizations.
This latest security operation comes just weeks after another worrying incident in Mandera. Five chiefs were abducted while traveling from Wargadud to Elwak Town for official duties.
Despite President William Ruto’s intervention, the chiefs remain missing, raising further concerns over the security situation in the region.
