Governor Mwangaza Responds to Gachagua’s Comments on President Ruto’s Visit to Meru

Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza has strongly responded to former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s remarks about President William Ruto’s potential visit to Meru.

Gachagua had stated that President Ruto should not be allowed to visit Meru if he follows through with the removal of Chief Justice Martha Koome. In her response on Monday, February 24, Mwangaza firmly rejected Gachagua’s statement and made it clear that Meru County would continue to support the president.

Speaking at an event in Meru, Mwangaza expressed her disappointment with Gachagua’s comments, describing them as divisive and harmful to the unity of the Meru people.

She emphasized that the leadership in Meru would not align with the former Deputy President’s stance and would remain loyal to President Ruto and his government.

Mwangaza called out Gachagua and his allies for what she described as selfish behavior, accusing them of attempting to blackmail President Ruto for their own gain. “We want to assure the president that this time, he should remain confident.

We are fully behind him. We will not allow anyone to undermine or blackmail him by threatening to switch sides,” Mwangaza declared.

She further stressed that joining the opposition would not bring any benefits to Meru County or its residents.

According to Mwangaza, the only individuals calling for such a shift are those who were rejected by the voters in previous elections, those without strong support bases, and those focused only on serving their personal interests.

The governor affirmed that standing behind President Ruto and Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is vital for the development of both Meru and Kenya as a whole.

“Supporting the president is crucial for the economic growth and transformation of our county and nation. We cannot afford to turn our backs on this leadership,” she added.

Mwangaza’s statements come a day after Gachagua vowed to lead protests if Chief Justice Martha Koome is removed from office. Gachagua voiced concerns that such a move would be a strategic attempt by President Ruto to weaken political influence in the Mount Kenya region.

The former Deputy President specifically focused on Koome’s ongoing legal battle to retain her position. He criticized the idea of removing her, questioning how President Ruto could target a leader from the community that played a significant role in his election victory. “We know that there are plans to impeach Koome.

This is unacceptable. How can you dismiss a leader from the community that helped you become president?” Gachagua questioned.

In his remarks, Gachagua also directed his frustration toward Kenya Kwanza leaders from the Meru region who have remained silent amid Koome’s troubles.

He warned that those leaders would face consequences in the next elections, declaring that his “political vehicle,” which he intends to unveil in May 2025, would ensure they are voted out of office.

“Any Meru leader who has betrayed the community will face punishment in 2027. The Mount Kenya region will ensure they are held accountable for the next 50 years,” he concluded.
