M23 rebel group seized control of Goma, the largest city in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). This takeover led to intense fighting, resulting in significant casualties and widespread displacement.
The DRC’s health ministry reported that Goma’s hospital morgues held 773 bodies following the offensive, with 2,880 individuals wounded over a four-day period.
The conflict forced hundreds of thousands to flee their homes, creating a dire humanitarian crisis.
The situation in Goma remains tense. Despite M23’s claims of restoring order, reports indicate ongoing shortages of medical supplies and essential services.
Looting and violence have disrupted daily life, and many residents fear returning home due to the threat of violence and sexual assault.
The United Nations has accused both the rebels and the Congolese army of serious human rights abuses during this period.
The international community is responding to the crisis. The European Union faces increasing pressure to suspend its minerals agreement with Rwanda, as critics allege Rwandan support for the M23 rebels to exploit DRC’s resources—a claim Rwanda denies.
Belgium is leading calls for this suspension, aiming to address the humanitarian crisis in Goma and promote regional stability.
