Tension as Nairobi County Dumps Garbage, Clamps Cars at Kenya Power Offices Over Unpaid Bills
There was a tense standoff outside Kenya Power’s Nairobi offices on Monday morning after the Nairobi County Government allegedly retaliated against the company by blocking a sewer line, causing waste to spill into its premises.
Kenya Power, which operates as KPLC on the Nairobi Stock Exchange, claimed that the county government took this drastic action after the power distributor cut off electricity supply to county offices over an outstanding debt.
According to KPLC, the County Government of Nairobi owes the company Ksh3.1 billion in unpaid electricity bills. Due to delayed payments, Kenya Power was forced to disconnect electricity in several county offices, prompting what appeared to be a retaliatory response from the county authorities.
Newshub.co.ke obtained videos and images showing large garbage trucks allegedly belonging to the county government blocking the entrance to Stima Plaza, the headquarters of Kenya Power. Additionally, massive piles of garbage were dumped right at the entrance, restricting access to the building.
In a press briefing at Stima Plaza, KPLC’s management confirmed that several company vehicles had also been clamped by county officers, who claimed that the utility firm had failed to pay for parking.
The county government is also said to have disconnected water supply to major offices around Nairobi, further escalating the dispute.
Speaking to the media, KPLC’s General Manager for Commercial Services and Sales, Rosemary Oduor, stated that the dispute over electricity bills had been ongoing for over two years.
She explained that Kenya Power had repeatedly engaged with Nairobi County officials regarding the debt, and the county had previously committed to making payments. However, the arrears continued to accumulate.
“This morning, we were going about our usual work when suddenly, garbage trucks from the county arrived. One of them dumped a load of waste right in front of our offices at Stima Plaza, and several more trucks were parked around the premises, seemingly waiting for further instructions,” Oduor revealed.
She further emphasized that KPLC had made several attempts to resolve the issue amicably. “We have had ongoing discussions with Nairobi County regarding their electricity bills for the past two years.
They have consistently raised concerns about their charges, and we have tried to find a solution. They had committed to making payments, but unfortunately, that has not happened.”
Employees reporting for work on Monday morning were left shocked as they watched the dramatic standoff unfold outside their workplace.
Many were forced to wait outside as county garbage trucks and piles of waste blocked access to the building, creating a chaotic scene at Stima Plaza.
