Former MP and Assistant Minister Willy Rotich Kamuren Passes Away

Former Baringo North MP Willy Rotich Kamuren has passed away while undergoing treatment in Nairobi on Friday, February 28.

Reports indicate that Kamuren was receiving medical care at a Nairobi hospital when he passed on.

Kamuren was a well-known politician and businessman who played a significant role in shaping politics in Baringo County. His contributions to leadership and development in the region have left a lasting impact.

He began his political career in 1963, making history as the first Member of Parliament (MP) for Baringo East, now known as Tiaty Constituency. At the time, he was elected on a Kenya African Democratic Union (KADU) ticket.

Later, in 1983, he was nominated to Parliament before successfully winning the Baringo North Constituency seat in 1988 under the ruling Kenya African National Union (KANU) party. He served as an elected MP for two consecutive terms until 1997.

Apart from his role as an MP, Kamuren also served as an Assistant Minister in the Office of the President, a position that further cemented his influence in national politics.

Outside politics, Kamuren was also a successful businessman. He owned the Grand Holiday Hotel and Lodge, located along Accra Road in Nairobi, which was a well-known establishment in the hospitality industry.

His leadership, dedication, and service to the people of Baringo have been widely recognized, and his name remains respected across the county. Many who knew him describe him as a passionate leader who tirelessly worked for the development of his community and the nation at large.

Following his demise, family, friends, and former constituents have come together to mourn him, paying tribute to his legacy as a committed and visionary leader.

Former Nominated MP Gideon Keter expressed his sorrow, stating, “Saddened by the passing of Hon. Willy Rotich Kamuren, a leader who truly made a difference through his immense dedication to Baringo and Kenya. My thoughts are with his family and friends. Rest well, Mzee.”

Keter further acknowledged Kamuren as a trailblazer in Kenya’s early parliamentary history, emphasizing how his leadership positively impacted many lives.

His passing comes just days after Baringo Senator William Cheptumo also passed away on Sunday, February 16, after a short illness.

Senate Speaker Amason Kingi confirmed Cheptumo’s death, revealing that the senator had been hospitalized in Nairobi before he succumbed.

Kamuren’s demise marks the loss of yet another experienced leader, leaving the people of Baringo County in mourning.
