Youths in Baringo County Warn Raila Against Alliances with Ruto Ahead of 2027 Elections
A group of youths from Baringo County have issued a strong warning to Raila Odinga, urging him not to align with President William Ruto in a potential political deal.
The warning comes amid growing speculation about an impending political alliance between the two leaders ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a video shared by Edwin Sifuna, the Secretary-General of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), the group expressed their concerns.
The youths, speaking passionately, called on Sifuna to relay their message to Raila, urging him not to enter into any agreement with Ruto.
This was ahead of a potential political pact between the two leaders, which is expected to shape the 2027 political landscape.
During a public event on Saturday, which was attended by several political figures, including Sifuna, the youths voiced their sentiments clearly.
They told Sifuna, “Tell Raila not to join Ruto.” Sifuna, who had accompanied other leaders to the burial of Baringo Senator William Cheptumo in Bartabwa, paused and requested the youths to repeat their message. In unison, they reiterated, “We don’t want him to join Ruto.”
President William Ruto himself was present at the burial, further intensifying the speculation about the potential deal.
According to reports from Nation, Ruto is reportedly prepared to offer Raila up to 50 percent of the Cabinet and other significant government positions in exchange for his support, signaling a major shift in political dynamics.
Sources close to the matter revealed that a midweek meeting between Ruto and Raila at State House Mombasa made significant progress in finalizing the terms of the proposed deal.
The announcement of the pact could come as early as next week. The meeting was attended by key leaders, including Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah, and Minority Leader Junet Mohamed, among others.
Meanwhile, Raila has spent the past few days meeting with his supporters in his home regions of Western and Nyanza, assuring them that his collaboration with Ruto is in the best interest of the nation. He has emphasized the need for unity and cooperation for the country’s progress.
Despite some factions within ODM suggesting that Raila may be considering running for president in 2027, his recent actions have shown a willingness to work with Ruto.
The two leaders have appeared to align on several issues since their joint failure in the bid for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship, suggesting they may be in agreement on several fronts.
Ruto, in recent public remarks, stressed the importance of unity and collaboration, stating, “We need all hands on deck to achieve this mission and vision for Kenya.”
In response, Raila has expressed his willingness to contribute, emphasizing, “We are available to help the continent of Africa, but more importantly, we are also available for Kenya.”
Signs indicate that Raila may be open to forming an alliance with Ruto, a move that could grant him a level of political power similar to what he held during the coalition government of 2008. Raila is already involved in Ruto’s government, with several ODM figures holding key Cabinet positions.
These include Opiyo Wandayi (Energy and Petroleum), John Mbadi (National Treasury and Economic Planning), Hassan Joho (Mining and Blue Economy), Wycliffe Oparanya (Cooperatives and MSMEs), and Beatrice Askul Moe (East African Community), all of whom were once influential leaders in the ODM.
This evolving political landscape continues to generate significant debate, with the youths of Baringo County standing firm in their opposition to Raila’s potential partnership with Ruto.
As the 2027 elections approach, the relationship between these two prominent political figures will remain a topic of intense scrutiny and discussion.
