Government Responds to Mysterious Illness in Kisii
The government has assured the public that swift action is being taken to address a health crisis in Kisii County, where more than 200 people have been hospitalized due to an unknown disease.
Public Health Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni confirmed that emergency response teams from the Ministry of Health had been sent to the affected area to investigate and contain the situation.
She explained that these medical experts are working closely with the county’s health officials to collect and analyze samples to determine the exact cause of the outbreak.
Speaking during a church event at the AIPCA in Mwea, Kirinyaga, Muthoni emphasized that although healthcare is largely managed at the county level, the national government steps in during major outbreaks to provide support. “Health is a devolved function, but whenever an issue of this magnitude arises, we deploy officers from the national surveillance unit to conduct thorough investigations and identify the cause,” she stated.
She further reassured the public that government officers are already on the ground, actively collaborating with county health workers to conduct tests and find a solution.
Additionally, Muthoni noted that the government can only decide on the best treatment and response strategy once all necessary information has been gathered.
In the meantime, she urged citizens to remain calm, assuring them that authorities were closely monitoring the situation and working towards a solution.
A multi-agency government team stationed in South Mugirango, where the disease was first detected, has advised residents to seek medical care at the nearest hospitals as they await test results from the government chemist.
Since the outbreak started, several individuals have been admitted to different medical facilities, including Tabaka Mission Hospital, Nyatike Level Two Hospital, and private clinics.
Patients have reported experiencing severe symptoms such as intense diarrhoea with bloody stools, high fever, and persistent headaches.
The illness, which emerged nearly three weeks ago, has now spread to three villages in South Mugirango—Nyabigege, Nyamarondo, and Nyarigiro—raising further concerns among residents and health officials.
