How Nyamira County Officials Illegally Hired 56 Employees

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has arrested four former officials from Nyamira County over allegations of abuse of office during their time in government.

In an official statement posted on its X account on Monday, March 3, the commission revealed that the four individuals—three men and one woman—were accused of illegally hiring 56 employees in the Department of Gender, Youth, Culture, and Social Services.

The arrested officials include a former County Executive Committee (CEC) member, a former Commissioner of the Nyamira County Public Service Board, a former Principal Culture Officer, and a former Assistant Director of Administration.

According to the EACC, the recruitment process was marred by corruption, favoritism, and illegal influence. Some of the employees were appointed to positions that were not approved by the County Cabinet and were not included in the budget for the 2016/2017 financial year.

“The suspects are accused of irregularly employing 56 individuals through a process that was characterized by corruption, nepotism, influence peddling, and clannism,” the commission stated.

The four suspects are currently being held at Kisii Central Police Station and are expected to be arraigned in court on Tuesday, March 4, 2025.

Another Government Official Arrested for Corruption

The EACC also reported the arrest of another government officer working with the Lands Control Board in Meru. The official was caught soliciting bribes from members of the public seeking land transaction approvals.

According to the anti-corruption body, the suspect was apprehended after detectives received a tip-off from a complainant who had sold his land and needed official consent from the board to transfer the property.

“The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has arrested a Tigania West Lands Control Board member for allegedly soliciting bribes from the public in exchange for processing approvals on various land-related matters,” the statement read.

The commission explained that the complainant reported the incident after the suspect demanded a bribe before issuing the required approval. Acting on the tip-off, EACC officers launched an operation that led to the suspect being caught in the act while receiving the bribe.

“EACC investigators conducted an operation and arrested the suspect while he was accepting the bribe. After the arrest, officers recovered a total of Ksh 70,000, believed to be proceeds of corruption,” the statement further revealed.

Following his arrest, the suspect was taken into custody at Isiolo Police Station, where he is being processed for prosecution on charges related to bribery and corruption.
