Pastor Clashes With Gachagua Allies, Walks Out of Funeral Amid Chaos
Drama unfolded on Tuesday during a burial ceremony in Kirinyaga, where tensions erupted between a pastor and a group of politicians allied with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. The situation turned chaotic when the pastor refused to allow the leaders to address the mourners, leading to a heated confrontation.
As emotions flared, the event took an unexpected turn, with the pastor eventually walking out after failing to calm the growing unrest. The tension escalated further when Kirinyaga Woman Representative Njeri Maina, alongside other leaders, including area Senator Kamau Murango, stormed the podium, demanding an opportunity to speak.
Despite mounting pressure, the pastor remained firm in his decision, insisting that the burial was not a political platform. However, his stance angered some mourners, who began chanting in protest.
“You must respect our leaders and let them speak to us,” some mourners shouted as they surged toward the podium, confronting the preacher.
Efforts by female pastors present at the ceremony to intervene and mediate the standoff bore no fruit. Their attempts to calm both sides and find a peaceful resolution were ignored, as emotions ran high.
With the situation spiraling out of control, the pastor ultimately decided to leave, as mourners jeered and followed him. Some cheered, while others recorded videos of the visibly frustrated preacher making his way to his car.
“Go away, leave!” some women were heard shouting in Kikuyu as they escorted him off the premises. The pastor, however, remained composed and got into his car without responding to the insults.
When later asked by the media why he had denied the politicians a chance to speak, the pastor defended his decision. He explained that he had initially allowed them to address the mourners, but they had taken advantage of the moment to engage in political talk instead of offering condolences.
“This is a funeral, not a political rally. We are not in conflict with them; we respected them and gave them a platform to speak,” the pastor clarified.
“But instead of mourning with the bereaved family, they used the opportunity to settle political scores. That was unacceptable,” he added.
He also dismissed speculation that his decision was influenced by the government or that he was intentionally acting against leaders associated with the former Deputy President.
