Huruma Ward MCA Arrested Over Fake Diploma and Forgery

Huruma Ward MCA, Peter Owera Oluoch, was arrested on Monday, March 3, 2025, for allegedly falsifying academic documents and providing misleading information.

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) disclosed that Oluoch falsely claimed to have earned a Diploma from Kenya Polytechnic. However, investigations established that he had never been enrolled at the institution.

Furthermore, he was accused of lying on self-declaration forms by falsely declaring his academic qualifications.

“Mr. Owera stated in his Self-Declaration Form that he possessed a Diploma from Kenya Polytechnic. However, after thorough verification, it was confirmed that he was never a student in the Diploma program at the institution,” the EACC stated.

In addition to falsifying his academic credentials, Oluoch was accused of forging the signature and stamp of an Advocate and Commissioner for Oaths.

Following his arrest, he was detained at the Integrity Centre police station and is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday, March 4, 2025.

Ongoing Crackdown on Fake Academic Certificates

The EACC revealed that Oluoch’s case is part of a broader investigation targeting several government officials suspected of forging academic documents.

His arrest comes just days after Juja MP George Ndung’u Koimburi was charged in court on February 19, 2025, over similar allegations. The MP faced six counts of forgery, with the prosecution accusing him of falsifying a Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) certificate for the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE).

According to the Office of the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), Koimburi allegedly forged the certificate between November and December 1994, intending to deceive authorities.

“Between November and December 1994, at an unknown time and location within Kenya, the accused forged a KCSE certificate, falsely presenting it as a genuine document issued by KNEC,” read the ODPP’s statement on February 19.

Past Leaders Caught in Academic Fraud Scandals

The issue of fake academic credentials has been a recurring scandal among Kenyan politicians. Several leaders have had to defend the authenticity of their certificates, including Kapsaret MP Oscar Sudi, Mining Cabinet Secretary Hassan Joho, former Gatundu North MP Clement Waibara, and ex-Wajir Governor Mohammed Abdi.

Additionally, former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu, ex-Taita Taveta Governor Granton Samboja, and former Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi have also faced accusations of forging academic documents at different times.

The growing number of cases has raised concerns over the integrity of public officials and their qualifications, prompting authorities to intensify investigations into academic fraud.
