Shock as High School Principal Found Dead in Bomet
Students, teachers, and education officials in Bomet County were thrown into mourning on Tuesday, March 5, following the sudden death of Kaplong Boys High School Chief Principal, Mike Yator.
The respected school head was discovered lifeless inside his house, which is located within the school premises. His body was found on the morning of Tuesday, March 5, after he failed to report to work, raising concerns among staff members.
Principal’s Last Moments
According to Paul Kimetto, a Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) official, the late principal had appeared to be in good health in the days leading up to his demise. He was described as cheerful and engaged, especially as he welcomed students returning to school after the half-term break.
However, on the night of Monday, March 4, around 9:30 pm, Yator reportedly mentioned feeling fatigued. Despite this, he did not raise any serious health concerns and chose to rest. Unfortunately, he failed to report to work the following morning, prompting staff members to check on him, only to make the heartbreaking discovery.
Calls for Investigation
Following the shocking incident, KUPPET officials called for a thorough investigation into the cause of Yator’s sudden death. Kimetto urged authorities to expedite the process and provide answers to the grieving community.
Expressing their grief, KUPPET officials from neighboring Kericho County, including Executive Secretary Mary Rotich and Treasurer Zablon Kipkoech Rono, also paid tribute to Yator, describing his death as a huge loss to the education sector.
Bomet County Police Commander Edward Imbwaga confirmed that investigations had been launched to establish the circumstances surrounding the principal’s untimely demise.
Bomet Governor and Leaders Mourn Yator
Bomet Governor Hillary Barchok was among the first leaders to send condolences, describing Yator as a passionate and dedicated educator whose impact was deeply felt within Kaplong Boys High School and the entire community. He highlighted Yator’s efforts in raising the school’s academic standards and promoting extracurricular activities.
“On behalf of the people of Bomet and personally, I extend my deepest condolences to his family, students, parents, colleagues, the teaching fraternity, Old Boys, and the Kaplong community at large,” Barchok shared on social media.
Second High-Profile Death in Education Sector
Yator’s passing comes just weeks after the education sector mourned another major loss—the tragic death of Johnson Nzioka, the chairperson of the Kenya Primary Schools Headteachers Association (KEPSHA).
Nzioka, who also served as the headteacher of Donholm Primary School in Nairobi, lost his life in a fatal accident along Mombasa Road on a Sunday afternoon.
The sudden deaths of these top education officials have left the teaching fraternity in shock, with many calling for better health monitoring and support systems for school administrators who often endure high-pressure work environments.
