Kenyan Woman Sentenced to Death in Vietnam for Drug Trafficking
A Kenyan woman has been sentenced to death in Vietnam, a country with some of the world’s harshest drug laws.
Reports from Vietnam indicate that the woman, identified only as Nduta, was found guilty of trafficking over 2 kilograms of illegal drugs.
She was arrested at Tân Sơn Nhất International Airport, located in Ho Chi Minh City, the largest city in Vietnam.
Authorities in Vietnam explained that Nduta had been hired by a man from Kenya to transport a suitcase to Laos in July 2023.
The suitcase was supposed to be delivered to a woman in Laos, and Nduta was expected to return to Kenya with unspecified items in exchange.
For agreeing to carry out this task, Nduta received a payment of $1,300 (around Ksh167,895 at current exchange rates) from the Kenyan man who hired her.
He also covered her plane tickets. The indictment showed that Nduta’s journey began on July 7 and took her through several countries. On July 14, she passed through Tân Sơn Nhất Airport, where her flight had a delay.
Due to the delay, airport staff advised her to complete the necessary entry procedures into Vietnam so they could assist her in booking a flight to Laos. However, during an immigration check, authorities found over 2 kilograms of drugs hidden inside her suitcase.
In court, Nduta claimed she had no knowledge of the drugs in her suitcase when she received it. However, prosecutors rejected this defense, arguing that she was trying to avoid responsibility for her actions. They insisted that Nduta should be held accountable for the trafficking.
On Thursday, Nduta was sentenced to death by the Vietnamese court. Vietnam enforces some of the strictest penalties for drug-related offenses, and those sentenced to death must go through a lengthy legal process before the execution.
After the sentencing, the case will be reviewed by the Supreme People’s Court and the Supreme People’s Procuracy. These bodies have up to two months to decide whether to consider any extraordinary appeals.
The convicted individual also has seven days to request clemency from the State President. If neither of these steps leads to a pardon, the court will set a date for execution.
The time between sentencing and execution can vary, depending on how long the legal reviews and clemency processes take.
Vietnam is widely known for its strict drug laws, with penalties for drug trafficking ranging from long prison sentences to the death penalty, depending on the severity of the crime.
