Emmanuel Chebukati, the son of the late former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairman Wafula Chebukati, shared the emotional last moments he spent with his father before his passing.
During the funeral service at the Chebukati family home in Sabatia-Kiminini Constituency, Emmanuel spoke about his father’s character and the loving relationship they had.
Emmanuel fondly remembered the final words his father spoke to him. He had just returned from a conference in Spain and brought a special gift for his father – an authentic Spanish hat worn during bullfighting competitions.
As Emmanuel placed the hat on his father’s head, Chebukati humorously responded, saying, “I feel like a bullfighter already.”
He went on to add, “Nobody can mess with me when I’m in my bullfighting hat.” Emmanuel’s account of his father’s playful response highlighted Chebukati’s courageous and jovial nature.
Although the world knew Wafula Chebukati as a determined, strong, and no-nonsense individual, Emmanuel described a very different side of his father in their personal lives.

“Through my eyes and those of our family members here, you will see him as simply the best father, husband, and brother anyone could have,” Emmanuel shared.
He also expressed that those who thought Chebukati never smiled or appeared tough didn’t truly know him.
Emmanuel, along with his siblings Jonathan and Rachel, eulogized their father, praising him for being a loving and supportive figure throughout their upbringing.
They expressed their gratitude for the valuable life lessons they learned from him and promised to pass these teachings on to future generations.
Wafula Chebukati passed away on February 20 after a battle with brain cancer. His death has left a deep void in the lives of his family and the nation.
To ensure a peaceful and dignified farewell, the government put in place strict security measures during the funeral.

Security forces were stationed to prevent any disturbances, and there was a ban on political groupings or party attire, allowing the family to honor Chebukati’s memory in a serene and respectful manner.
