Police in Nyakach Subcounty, Kisumu, are investigating the shocking murder of a village elder who was brutally hacked to death during a night vigil on Friday.
The deceased, identified as Joseph Otieno Odhiambo, was attacked by a gang of suspected criminals who stormed the gathering and unleashed violence.
The incident occurred at around 11:20 p.m. in Saema village, where mourners had gathered to pay their last respects to the late Peres Owuor.
Eyewitnesses reported that chaos erupted when a group of armed goons unexpectedly raided the vigil, causing panic among attendees.
In the attack, Odhiambo, who was part of the security team at the event, was repeatedly slashed with machetes, sustaining deep head wounds that led to his immediate death.
Confirming the tragic incident, Junior Onyango Omollo, the Assistant Chief of Kajimbo Sublocation, revealed that the deceased was among those providing security at the vigil.
He noted that the attackers were well known within the village.
“The late Joseph Otieno Odhiambo was one of the community members assigned to maintain security during the vigil.
Unfortunately, they were ambushed and attacked, resulting in his brutal killing. The assailants are familiar faces in the village,” Omollo stated.
Following the gruesome murder, Upper Nyakach Assistant County Commissioner Orina Dawin, along with security officers, visited the scene and condemned the killing in the strongest terms.
Describing the act as inhumane and unacceptable, he called on the police to intensify night patrols to curb the rising insecurity in the area.
“This is a despicable and barbaric act that has left the community in mourning. Such heinous crimes cannot be tolerated.
I urge law enforcement officers to conduct thorough investigations and ensure that the culprits face the full weight of the law,” Orina declared.
Meanwhile, officers from the Nyakach Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have taken over the case, vowing to bring those responsible to justice.
Odhiambo’s body has since been moved to Nyabondo Mission Hospital morgue, where a post-mortem examination will be conducted as part of the investigations.
