Government Plans to Hire More Teachers, Says PS Omollo
Interior Security Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo held a crucial meeting with officials from the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) on Sunday, March 16.
The meeting brought together representatives from all 21 KNUT branches in the Nyanza region to discuss strategies for improving the education sector in collaboration with the government.
During the discussion, PS Omollo emphasized that leadership within the education sector extends beyond unions.
He pointed out that many of those present could become key decision-makers in the future, following the footsteps of past leaders who transitioned into public service.
“The leadership in this room is the foundation of tomorrow’s governance. From this team, we will see future Members of Parliament, Senators, Governors, and other influential policymakers,” Omollo remarked.
He urged the educators to engage meaningfully in discussions and advocate for policies that would strengthen both the education sector and national development.
Government’s Commitment to Addressing Teacher Shortages
While acknowledging the major strides made in teacher recruitment, PS Omollo admitted that there were still significant staffing gaps in schools.
He noted that despite the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) hiring 76,000 teachers within the two years of the Kenya Kwanza administration, the demand for more educators remained high.
To address this, Omollo assured the teachers that the government was committed to bridging the gap by employing more teachers and improving school infrastructure.
He highlighted the need for expanded learning facilities, especially in rapidly growing urban areas like Nairobi, where student populations continue to rise.
Recognition of Teachers’ Role in CBC Transition
PS Omollo also commended teachers for their dedication in implementing the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), a transition that required significant adjustments in teaching methods.
He assured them that the government would continue to support this curriculum shift by providing necessary resources and training.
Additionally, he underscored the importance of ongoing stakeholder engagement in driving education reforms. He assured the KNUT representatives that the government would continue prioritizing policies aimed at strengthening the sector.
Encouraging Teachers to Leverage Government Programs
In his address, Omollo encouraged the KNUT leadership to take full advantage of government programs designed to promote capacity-building and community development.
He stressed that these initiatives could help teachers grow professionally while also benefiting their communities.
He further pledged to advocate for policies that enhance the teaching profession, including better working conditions and career growth opportunities.
In response, KNUT leaders reaffirmed their commitment to collaborating with government agencies to improve the education sector.
The meeting was also attended by other key leaders from the region, including Gem Member of Parliament Elisha Odhiambo and North Kanyamkago Ward MCA George Omamba.
