Health CS Aden Duale Issues Stern Warning to Ministry Staff Over SHA Sabotage
Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale has warned that any staff within the Ministry of Health found undermining the implementation of the Social Health Authority (SHA) will face dismissal.
Speaking at Adams Arcade Mosque during the Eid ul-Fitr celebrations on Sunday, Duale vowed to take decisive action against individuals he accused of deliberately frustrating the government’s efforts to achieve Universal Health Coverage (UHC).
Duale revealed that he had already discussed his mandate with President William Ruto, who gave him the green light to take any necessary measures to ensure the success of SHA.
“With the President’s commitment and my own dedication, I want to assure Kenyans that universal healthcare is for everyone,” Duale stated.
He further warned government employees with selfish interests, saying, “They must decide whether they want to serve the citizens or work for their own benefit.”
Challenges Facing SHA Implementation
Although SHA was rolled out nearly six months ago, the healthcare system has yet to be fully embraced by the public due to various challenges. The government is dealing with issues such as misinformation and resistance from certain quarters.
Additionally, some rogue government officials have been accused of colluding with private hospitals to undermine the effectiveness of SHA, resulting in delayed payments and poor service delivery.
The Supreme Council of Kenya Muslims (SUPKEM) Chairperson, Hassan Ole Nado, also raised concerns about private hospitals manipulating SHA services for financial gain.
Speaking during the Eid celebrations, he pointed out that some hospitals intentionally limit the amount of money that can be used through SHA, encouraging patients to pay in cash instead.
“We have seen cases where hospitals restrict SHA usage to push patients toward cash payments,” Ole Nado observed.
He urged CS Duale to take action against such facilities and ensure Kenyans receive the healthcare benefits they are entitled to.
Duale’s Crackdown on Corrupt Officials and Fraudulent Clinics
Duale made it clear that anyone within his ministry who prioritizes personal gain over the welfare of citizens will not be tolerated.
“If you are in this ministry for personal interests, then you have no place in Afya House,” he warned.
His remarks come just days after he announced that most private hospitals operating in residential areas will be shut down once SHA is fully implemented.
According to the CS, about 60 percent of these clinics will be closed since they were established through fraudulent means under the now-defunct National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF), which has been replaced by SHA.
Duale assured Kenyans that his ministry is committed to ensuring the success of SHA and delivering quality healthcare to all citizens.
He emphasized that the government will not allow corrupt individuals to interfere with the system meant to benefit millions of Kenyans.
