ODM Dismisses Several Party Officials Ahead of Grassroots Elections
The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has dismissed all county election coordinators in Nairobi County just days before the party’s grassroots elections set for next week.
In a statement on Wednesday, April 2, ODM Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna also confirmed that the party had removed the chairperson of election coordinators in Migori County, along with several coordinators from Siaya County.
Sifuna explained that the party’s National Elections Coordinating Committee (NECC) would appoint new coordinators for the affected regions before Saturday, April 7.
“The county elections coordinators for Nairobi have been dismissed entirely. In addition, the chair of coordinators in Migori and some coordinators in Siaya County have also been replaced with immediate effect. The NECC will announce their replacements before Saturday,” Sifuna stated.
ODM Appoints New National Organizing Secretary
Meanwhile, ODM’s central committee has appointed Wajir County Governor Ahmed Abdullahi Mohamed as the new National Organizing Secretary.
This follows the resignation of Abdisalan Ahmed, who was nominated by President William Ruto as the Principal Secretary for the State Department of National Government Coordination.
Speaking on the matter, Sifuna noted that the party had officially received Ahmed’s resignation and wished him well in his new role.
“This morning, the party’s central committee formally received and accepted the resignation of Abdisalan Ahmed, who served as our National Organizing Secretary.
Since he has been nominated for the position of Principal Secretary, we extend our best wishes as he prepares for his vetting this Friday and in his future responsibilities, should he be confirmed,” Sifuna said.
ODM to Begin Grassroots Elections Across the Country
ODM is set to commence its grassroots elections on Monday, April 7, across all 47 counties, according to ODM Director of Communications Phillip Etale.
The elections will start at the ward level, where only delegates elected at the polling unit level will be allowed to participate.
On Wednesday, April 9, the elected delegates at the ward level will move on to the next phase, where they will elect officials at the constituency level.
“This election is a continuation of the process that began on November 17, 2024, when party members voted for officials at the polling unit level.
The upcoming Monday elections will take place at the sub-branch level, which refers to the ward level,” Sifuna clarified.
NECC Assures Smooth Election Process
Emily Awita, Chairperson of the National Elections Coordinating Committee (NECC), assured party members that everything was in place to ensure a transparent and smooth election process.
“We have already deployed returning officers and presiding officers to all 290 constituencies to oversee the elections. Everything is set, and we expect the process to run without any issues,” she stated.
With these changes and preparations in place, ODM is gearing up for a crucial phase in its internal party elections, which will determine the leadership at various levels ahead of future political engagements.
