Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has assured that students at the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) will benefit from government financial support through the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB).
He made this pledge during the 2025 KMTC graduation ceremony held on Thursday, December 4, 2025, at Kasarani Stadium, addressing graduates, faculty, and stakeholders.
In his speech, Kindiki explained that he intends to engage key officials from the ministries of Health, Treasury, and Education to develop a robust funding model specifically tailored for KMTC students.
“I will be bringing together relevant ministries in the state departments next week to finalize a formula and establish a clear process on how KMTC students can start accessing financial support,” he stated.
He emphasized that this government initiative aims to make education more accessible, acknowledging that not all families are able to cover the costs of training at KMTC.
Kindiki further clarified the distinction between the current KMTC funding system and the funding model used for university students under HELB.
Currently, KMTC students depend on the Afya Elimu Fund, which functions solely as a loan. This means that all funds provided must be repaid with an annual interest rate of 4% after graduation.
On the other hand, the university funding model combines both a government scholarship and a loan component.
University students admitted through the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) undergo a Means Testing Instrument (MTI) assessment to evaluate their financial need.
Based on this assessment, students receive a scholarship covering between 30% and 70% of their tuition fees, significantly reducing the amount they are required to repay after completing their studies.
Additionally, the Deputy President highlighted a critical challenge at KMTC: a shortage of lecturers across various campuses. He promised to work closely with the relevant ministry to ensure that more qualified lecturers are deployed.
This effort aims to strengthen training and produce enough professional health workers to support Kenya’s universal health coverage program.
Kindiki also pointed out that the government has programs in place to enhance employment opportunities for graduates.
The “Kazi kwa Ground” initiative focuses on creating job opportunities for all students within Kenya, while the “Kazi Majuu Program” is designed to help Kenyan professionals secure employment opportunities abroad, ensuring that skilled workers can contribute both locally and internationally.
This announcement marks a significant step toward improving access to quality education and financial support for KMTC students, while also addressing staffing challenges and boosting employment opportunities for graduates.
