Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has suffered a political setback after one of his most loyal supporters, Maragua MP Mary Wamaua, switched allegiance to President William Ruto.
On Thursday, April 3, Wamaua reshaped the political dynamics in Central Kenya by publicly endorsing President Ruto.
Speaking during the Head of State’s visit to Nyandarua, she admitted that she had made a mistake by backing Gachagua in the past.
While addressing the crowd, Wamaua revealed that she had been in discussions with Deputy President Kithure Kindiki since November 2024.
“Professor Kithure Kindiki is a close friend of mine. Mr. President, I know you have been observing me, and I want to confirm that I have been engaging with Kindiki since last November,” she stated amid cheers from the crowd.
She further added, “Let me tell you, Mr. President, you are a dear friend, and despite making a few mistakes along the way, slipping is not the same as falling.”
Her sudden shift is expected to stir fresh political debates, especially since Wamaua was one of the most outspoken defenders of Gachagua.
Back in October 2024, when an impeachment motion against Gachagua was tabled, Wamaua strongly opposed it, condemning lawmakers for what she termed an ‘unfortunate’ move.
“If the Deputy President is being targeted with impeachment simply because he championed the unity of the mountain, then history will one day speak for itself. We know that some people fear a united mountain,” she had remarked.
Even after Gachagua’s impeachment, Wamaua remained on good terms with him. Just recently, she was spotted alongside the former DP during a church service at Almighty God Ministries in Mathioya, Murang’a County.
However, her stance appears to have changed following President Ruto’s development tour across Central Kenya, where he visited Ol Kalou, Kinangop, Kangema, and her own constituency, Maragua.
While addressing the public in Maragua during Ruto’s tour, Wamaua declared her unwavering support for the President.
“The President asked me an important question, and since the people who elected me have spoken, I must listen. Whoever my people recognize as their President, I also recognize as my President,” she stated.
She then went on to pledge her loyalty to Ruto, adding, “Mr. President, I am now your servant, and I hope you will utilize my skills to drive development in Maragua and Murang’a County.”
