Gachagua Accuses President Ruto of Planning to Delay 2027 Elections
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has come out with serious claims, alleging that President William Ruto is plotting to delay the upcoming 2027 general elections in a bid to extend his rule beyond what the Constitution allows.
Speaking during a church service at PCEA Mwiki in Kasarani, Gachagua claimed that the recent attacks targeting him are part of a wider scheme to create chaos that could be used as an excuse to postpone the elections.
He said he believes these incidents are being used to provoke his supporters and create nationwide unrest.
While addressing the congregation, the former DP referred to an earlier chaotic incident where a group of rowdy youths stormed the church and disrupted the service briefly.
He strongly believes this was a planned move meant to agitate and push him into reacting violently.
“I urge our people to remain calm and not fall into the trap of provocation. I can clearly see that they are trying to make me respond with violence so that they can use the resulting chaos as a reason to push for election delays,” Gachagua stated.
“I will not be part of any disorder. I understand the plan is to make me react, hoping it will lead to a crisis big enough for them to argue that elections should be pushed forward,” he added, appealing to his supporters to uphold peace and resist being dragged into confrontations.
These remarks came shortly after a tense moment in Nairobi’s Kasarani area, where gunshots rang out and confusion erupted as security personnel linked to Gachagua fired warning shots to disperse a crowd of youths who had invaded the PCEA Kasarani East church.
Reports suggest that the group of youths had forcefully entered the church demanding money, leading to destruction of property.
They allegedly damaged chairs and injured some church members in the chaos. Eyewitnesses noted that many of the youths were wearing military-like uniforms and combat gear, raising concern about the nature of the attack and the intentions behind it.
In a strongly worded statement, Gachagua accused President Ruto and Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja of being behind the disruption.
He said the attack at the church showed a new level of political hostility and lack of respect for sacred spaces.
“My President, what changed in you? Why would you send people to attack me in a church? This is a house of God.
Last week it was Limuru, then Nyeri, and now even a church is not safe? You’ve become fearless in your ways,” Gachagua said, visibly disappointed and disturbed.
He described the incident as heartless and deeply insensitive, stressing that targeting a church was crossing the line.
Gachagua warned that such attacks are not just about him but are endangering the peace and stability of the entire nation.
This marks yet another chapter in the growing political tension between President Ruto and his former deputy, with Gachagua now positioning himself as a vocal critic of the current administration.
His claims about election postponement are likely to stir more debate in the coming weeks, especially among opposition leaders and civil society groups monitoring the state of democracy in Kenya.
