Former Kajiado Woman Representative Janet Marania Teyiaa Passes Away
Former Kajiado County Woman Representative, Janet Marania Teyiaa, has died, leaving behind a legacy of resilience, courage, and unwavering service to her community.
Her death was announced on Monday, April 7, by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who remembered working with her during their time in the twelfth Parliament.
In his heartfelt message shared on social media, Gachagua expressed deep shock and sorrow over her passing.
“I have learnt of the passing of Janet Marania Teyiaa with great shock,” Gachagua said. “I served with Janet in the 12th Parliament when she represented the people of Kajiado County as their Woman Representative.”
Janet’s political journey began in 2013 when she was nominated by the Jubilee Party to serve in the 11th Parliament.
She represented persons living with disabilities and quickly earned respect for her dedication and active participation.
In 2017, she contested for the Woman Representative seat in Kajiado County and won with an impressive 186,085 votes, overcoming societal prejudice and breaking barriers.
Her victory was especially significant because many people doubted her candidacy due to her disability. Her opponent from the ODM party came second with 104,486 votes.
Gachagua highlighted her inspiring life story, noting that as a young girl, Janet was rescued by a social worker due to her physical disability.
Despite the challenges she faced in her early years, she grew into a strong and determined leader who showed that disability does not define a person’s potential.
“Janet, as a young girl, was saved by a social worker due to her disability in her childhood days. She became the epitome of resilience and strength.
Her life proved that no obstacle is too big for someone with a determined heart and a great spirit. She stood out as a shining example for people living with disabilities,” he added.
Throughout her political career, Janet remained a strong voice for the disabled and consistently advocated for inclusivity and equal rights.
Even though the cause of her death was not disclosed, Gachagua emphasized her remarkable contributions, especially in championing the rights and welfare of people living with disabilities in Kajiado and beyond.
In 2022, as the general elections approached, Janet chose not to defend her seat and instead threw her support behind Leah Sangaire, who was contesting on a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket.
This move was recognized and praised by President William Ruto, who commended her for putting unity and party loyalty above personal ambition.
“We appreciate the courage and sacrifice that Hon. Janet Teyiaa showed by stepping aside and supporting the UDA Woman Representative candidate for Kajiado County, Leah Sangaire. United we win,” President Ruto posted on social media on May 11, 2022.
Janet Marania Teyiaa will be remembered not only as a trailblazer for persons with disabilities in politics but also as a leader who deeply cared for the people she served.
Her life journey, marked by challenges and triumphs, continues to inspire many across Kenya.
