Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has broken his silence following a shocking incident where goons stormed a church service attended by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
The attack happened on Sunday, April 6, at PCEA Kasarani East Church, causing national outrage.
Speaking in Mombasa on Monday, April 7, Murkomen assured the public that the government will not tolerate such criminal activities.
He said that security agencies have been put on high alert across the country to ensure that all public spaces — including churches, schools, and streets — are safe and free from violent groups and gangs.
Murkomen strongly emphasized that all Kenyans, regardless of their political beliefs, have a right to be protected under the Constitution.
He said that the government’s role is to guarantee that every individual can exercise their freedoms without fear of intimidation or violence.
“Part of our mission in dealing with criminal gangs is to ensure that no part of Kenya becomes a safe haven for goons.
Whether it’s a church, a school, or even on the streets, we will not allow these unlawful activities to go on,” Murkomen said.
He continued, “We must uphold the rule of law in every part of the country. Injustice anywhere is injustice everywhere. We cannot allow illegal practices to take root. We’re committed to ensuring law and order prevails, and our focus is not on taking political sides. What matters most is that all Kenyans, as long as they are peaceful, can enjoy their constitutional rights without interference.”
The chaos in Kasarani erupted when a group of youth stormed the church while Gachagua was attending the service. Bodyguards and police officers linked to the former Deputy President were forced to fire gunshots in the air to scatter the intruders and restore calm.
Reacting to the incident, Gachagua strongly condemned the attack, calling it “insensitive and unkind.”
He accused President William Ruto and Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja of being behind the disruptions, alleging that they were sponsoring goons to target him.
“My President, what changed? You’ve now reached a new low — sending goons to a place of worship? Last week you sent them to Limuru, then to Nyeri, and now even to a church,” Gachagua said during a passionate address. “This is a new level of boldness. This isn’t politics anymore — it’s personal,” he added.
Following the attack, Matungulu Member of Parliament Stephen Mule issued a stern warning to the Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja. Mule demanded that the IG act swiftly or risk being removed from office.
The MP said that Kanja must investigate the incident thoroughly and provide the names of those who were responsible for hiring and paying the goons who stormed the church service.
Mule insisted that Parliament is monitoring the situation closely and will take action if those behind the attack are not held accountable.
“How can you be seen at a political rally in Nyeri and yet fail to protect worshippers in Kasarani?” he asked. “We are watching. You must act now, or Parliament will begin the process to remove you from office.”
He added, “We want the Inspector General to stop engaging in politics and instead focus on his duty to protect Kenyans.
Our security institutions must not be used for political battles. The faithful deserve to worship in peace without fear.”
This attack comes amid growing political tensions in the country, with leaders from various sides trading accusations.
Many are now calling for calm and for the security agencies to rise above politics and safeguard the rights and safety of all citizens.
